Yep this feels particularly relevant to me just now, the brand of liquor stores I work for is about to implement one of these points systems and the math is CHOCKED.
Spend 100 bucks and get the equivalent of a single dollar back, so in order to get 5 bucks (the minimum cost possible in the store) you would need to spend 500 bucks on other booze.
500 bucks per week will get you a free 2 cans or bottles of expired/bruised up alcohol. Seems like a great return that won't at all incentive alcoholics to drink more and have the council stare directly at our licence again.
Never joined a loyalty club ever. Coles/Woolies/Aldi whoever is closer. Never fly Quntas or Air NZ or joined any silly airmiles clubs – there are much better much cheaper flights if you shop around. Still, people ARE stupid!
The funnest thing was the original inventors of the 'loyalty card' – Tescos (in the UK – The Tesco Clubcard) collected so much data within the first few weeks that the stores couldn't send it down the internet fast enough nor did they have central servers fast enough to process through all of the collected info. In the end they came up with a clever way of processing the data on-site and only sending pertinent data to the headoffice instead and letting local stores get in things which were popular themselves.
Don't knock the airline loyalty programmes. I used to fly to Sweden and back each week for work. A few months in I got gold level with Scandinavian Airways and it was fantastic. Early to the airport, straight to the lounge, get absolutely smashed for 2 hours, sneak a few beers into my bag, stagger onto the plane, rest is history.
You haven't lived until you've knocked back a pint of Bailey's in an airport lounge. I should highlight that I stopped doing this when I found out how many calories it is. Nearly 2000.
Literally the one thing Wesfarmers chose to keep when they sold off Coles was Flybuys. Way too much value in the data it gathers through that loyalty program.
These programs are so successful, that airlines' loyalty programs are worth MORE then the actual airlines
Yes, if you put together the fleet of planes, the landing slots, the gate allocation, the value of the experience of their crews, the route rights, EVERYTHING together its worth LESS than just their loyalty programs
A lot of loyalty programs only have good deals when you first register, so you just have to keep making new accounts every time you want to shop with them
I have created a lot of email addresses so every time I go shopping for clothes in the same shop, I register with a new address, make up a new name, and I always have a discount. You just have to learn how to use these memberships to your advantage
I don't see any problem with these. I save an awful lot of money with tesco coupons. I only buy items which are on sale (and cheaper than in other supermarkets) and in addition to that I use a ton of coupons that my whole family sends me, so sometimes I buy stuff worth of 18 euro and I only pay 9. And you do not have to give them your real data. You can make up whatever data. Also, everyone should have at least one email address which they only use for similar things. I almost always give a false name and everything. I even have 2 tesco accounts. They give you more coupons if you do not shop. So if you do shop, you need one more account through which you never shop but you will receive more coupons there because they will try to lure you if they see you never shop with them. Also, if you scan your items youself, you will get twice as many points. And you can get coupons for points as well in addition to all of the other discount coupons. The next time I shop with them it will be free when I use all the coupons I have

And everyone I know still asks me why I don't have any loyalty cards…………………
I always watch these a few times over because Chris puts so much thought into each segment.. the depth of explanation is so so deep
Remember Fly Buys? That was the first and last time I fell for that. It took about two months before I worked it out that I'd never get shit.
Ah, Ansett. Lol.
The caption wrote “without credit card” when it should have “with our credit card”. Are you using qantas points to auto generate captions, Chris?

Let's be family. Let's be a loyal member. 😂😂
It's all about the data 😓
Paying loyalty club.
You have to pay to have the bonuses. It exists.
“I dont like this idea”
…
“…a billion dollars…”
“I love it”
FAR OUT
It’s your data that they really want, then they can customise their scams
I bet the Qantas executives are hi fiving each other over that profit
Buy a 100 pints of Guinness and get a free Guinness jacket
I know a guy with a beer gut and 3 jackets 😢😂😂😂
"Thank you for your $8,200 purchase. Here's 82 points. Redeemable immediately at these preferred retailers."
Sweet, I can buy a pack of bubble yum!
How does "an Australian airline" not ALREADY have a local monopoly?!

But when you try to use those points for any big purchases they mysteriously expire all at the same time or are no longer valid.
just applied for a credit card that had points to give me 25 cents on spending $100.
*i reckon they will*
You forgot to mention we make the points, which are worth nothing, also expire.
There's a local corner store I avoid like it's ground zero for a zombie plague because they keep asking me about their points program.
Its sucks that humans just keep falling for all of these scams…

I do this with my credit card because I pay it off every month. So I make money off of them. 😀

"What if, in exchange for your gov't money, I trade you nearly worthless brand money?"
Oh shit, yes gimme more.
“A single Australian airline” sorry which one is that? Lol
Only if you know the future..
people like fantasy points, even more if they dont want to think and like to watch tv
A billion dollars. Such an underestimate
I watched this short video, and the very next story video happens to be a commercial for a rewards credit card for an airline.

Rewe has a loyalty programm. Buying 150 € of grocerys gets you a small discount on a set of plates or storage container.
The Australian airline that's the most unaustralian thing ever. QUANTAS a pack of c++t's
I love and hate your videos 😅if you know what I mean
Remember when having a load of plastic cards meant you were rich? Now it means you're a coupon clipper.
And these days every single shop needs to have its own fkn app 💩
Remember, if you care about your airline points then he’s talking about you 👍
The new thing is called ecosystems

You pretty much finance their business in return they just issue and give points to you. They have full control of how much points will be worth.
Yeah I still don't get how loyalty programs work
The airline actually runs at a loss. The loyalty programme is worth more than the airline.
Woolworths have a loyalty card. A carton of 30 cans of coke, $50.
Aldi doesn't have a loyalty programme. Same coke $30.
I really wish you guys would do some long format videos as well.
