Mary J. Blige questioned why a concertgoer had paid to see her only to boo during the show. She called the person an “idiot” from the stage, interrupting her Las Vegas performance to address the disruption.
The exchange happened Wednesday, October 28, at Dolby Live inside Park MGM. Blige, 55, is performing there as part of her My Life, My Story residency.
An eyewitness told TMZ that she was standing at a microphone between songs, roughly halfway through her two-hour concert, when the booing began. The outlet published footage the following morning.
The engagement is Blige’s first Las Vegas residency, which opened May 1. Dolby Live holds approximately 5,200 people, with a live band and dancers accompanying her career-spanning show.
Blige Resumed the Show Before Bringing Out Wyclef Jean
“I hope someone sees you and politely removes you,” Blige said during the confrontation. Other audience members cheered as she addressed the interruption. She then apologized to the crowd and returned to performing.
About 20 minutes later, according to TMZ’s report, Wyclef Jean joined her as a surprise guest. They performed “911,” their 2000 collaboration from his album The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book. The duet earned a nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal at the 2001 Grammys, according to the Recording Academy.
Jean follows other collaborators who have appeared during the residency. MGM Resorts reported that the sold-out opening weekend featured guests including The LOX, Method Man and 50 Cent. The production’s repertoire includes “Family Affair,” “Be Without You,” “Real Love” and “I’m Goin’ Down.”
Blige Has Seven More Residency Shows Scheduled Through February
Blige discussed the show with Robin Roberts in a May 6 ABC News interview, describing a performance that draws on difficult periods in her life as well as celebrations. Singing “Not Gon’ Cry” and material from her My Life album still brought back painful memories, she said.
“They’re gonna have fun. They’re gonna dance. They might cry,” she told Roberts. Opening night also included an invitation for a fan to join her onstage for her signature “Mary Bop.” Blige traced the dance to her upbringing in Yonkers, New York.
She said listeners regularly told her that her music had helped them through their own hardships. When she originally recorded those songs, she had been trying to work through her personal struggles, without realizing how strongly other people would connect with them.
Her next performances are October 30 and 31. Park MGM lists five further dates on February 12, 13, 17, 19 and 20, 2027. Doors open at 7 p.m., with each show scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
