Canada-based Kobo Resources has entered into an earn-in agreement to expand its exploration in Côte d’Ivoire, focusing on the gold-rich Yakassé project.

This move aligns with the company's strategy to assess gold-bearing structural corridors in the region.

The gold exploration licence application for the Yakassé project, initially filed by Geoservices in February 2021, was later amended to increase the area from 67km² to 74.06km² at Kobo's request in July 2025.

The project is strategically located near other exploration sites including the Nesdave permit and the Kuniboa application, enhancing its potential value.

Situated approximately 100km north-east of Abidjan, the Yakassé project is accessible via established roads and is in a region known for Birimian geological formations, which are often associated with gold deposits.

Under the agreement, Kobo Resources will collaborate with Geoservices on exploration activities, contingent upon Geoservices securing a research permit.

An initial payment of C$20,000 ($14,503.5) has been made by Kobo, with additional payments and share issuances outlined upon further progress and approvals.

To acquire a 90% interest in the Yakassé licence, Kobo Resources is committed to a phased investment totalling approximately C$719,500 over four years.

Each year's investment correlates with an increasing percentage of interest in the permit, culminating in a 90% stake by the fourth year.

Should Kobo decide to pursue an exploitation licence, a joint venture (JV) will be formed with Geoservices and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire, with Kobo holding the majority share.

Additionally, Kobo retains the option to increase its JV share by purchasing an extra 4% from Geoservices for C$2m.

The agreement also includes a 1% net smelter return to Geoservices, with Kobo having the option to buy back half of this royalty. Upon commercial exploitation, Geoservices is set to receive additional company shares, subject to regulatory approval.

Kobo Resources CEO and director Edward Gosselin said: “Our earn-in agreement on the Yakassé Project marks a meaningful step in Kobo’s strategy to expand our exploration portfolio in one of Côte d’Ivoire’s promising gold regions. This project sits within a structurally complex and underexplored area that has already returned high-grade results from past drilling by reputable operators.

“With its expected strong regional potential and well-developed infrastructure, the Yakassé Project aligns with our long-term growth strategy. Subject to the approval of the pending application, we look forward to advancing exploration on this project with Geoservices as we continue unlocking new opportunities alongside the development of our flagship Kossou Project.”

“Kobo extends exploration in Côte d’Ivoire with new earn-in deal” was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
