Bret Michaels’ return to the stage lasted one night before his doctors told him he needed to stop touring again.
The 63-year-old Poison frontman performed at The Bowl at Sugar Hill in Georgia on August 21, his first concert after several weeks away while recovering from surgery for a complicated obstructing kidney stone. The following morning, Michaels’ team announced through his official website that doctors and paramedics who assessed him immediately after the show determined he needed considerably more recovery time.
“We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being,” Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel said. They explained that Michaels had wanted to attempt the comeback show but now required “a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery,” particularly because summer heat and humidity can affect his blood sugar levels.
The decision wipes out Michaels’ remaining 2026 performances and is expected to keep him off the road for the next several months. It came only hours after he had been celebrating his return and saying he hoped to perform again the following night.
Michaels Finished His Comeback Show Before Doctors Pulled Him Off the Road
Michaels made it through the August 21 performance in Sugar Hill before the decision was made. His team said doctors and paramedics evaluated him “immediately after the show” and concluded that he still needed additional rest and recovery from his recent procedures. According to PEOPLE, the announcement meant Michaels would take the remainder of 2026 away from performing.
The first casualty was his scheduled August 22 appearance at Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Michaels Entertainment Group said the cancellation also covered private events and the other concerts planned for the remainder of the year.
He Had Been Excited to Return Just Hours Earlier
On his official site, Michaels joked that the recent surgery might force him to perform in his “infamous black travel rock ‘n’ roll sweatpants,” but promised, “I will be giving 100% of everything I’ve got!” He was already looking ahead to Tennessee. “If all goes well, I can’t wait for the Mountain Music Festival tomorrow,” he wrote.
The Kidney Stone Had Already Forced Michaels Off the Road
Michaels’ latest break traces back to severe kidney pain he experienced in July. In a July 22 health update, he said a kidney stone had failed to pass after nearly seven days and that he continued performing through concerts in Charleston, West Virginia, Grantville, Pennsylvania, and at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane.
After the Fairchild performance, Michaels said the pain became too severe and he went to the hospital. He was diagnosed on July 19 with what his medical team later called a “complicated obstructing kidney stone” and underwent surgery. His doctors subsequently said a ureteral stent had been placed during the procedure. On July 27, they ordered three to four weeks of postoperative recuperation, limiting Michaels to light physical activity until the stent could be removed.
Dr. Borhan said at the time that Michaels’ recovery was complicated by underlying health factors including Type 1 diabetes and a lower-back compression fracture. She warned that the physical demands of his high-energy performances could worsen pain and inflammation associated with the stent, while diabetes increased concerns about healing and infection.
Michaels Says Heat, Travel and Medication Changes Took a Toll
One day after the cancellations were announced, Michaels provided more detail about why the comeback proved harder than he expected. In an August 23 update, he said he had genuinely believed he would be able to continue performing despite what he called a recent “health domino effect.”
Michaels said he and his doctors and physical therapists were working to adjust new medications. He also acknowledged that he had failed to adequately account for the Georgia heat and for taking a coast-to-coast flight on the same day as his comeback concert.
According to Michaels, those factors affected both his blood sugar and blood pressure while his medical team was also adjusting medication, including his insulin. He said his excitement about being back onstage led him to give “every ounce of energy” he had rather than easing into the return.
Michaels said he hoped to get the medical issues “figured out much sooner than later” and added that, if the decision were entirely his, he would be back onstage immediately. He was particularly disappointed about missing Mountain Music Festival and vowed to return to the event in 2027 or 2028.
Venues Are Already Marking His Remaining Shows as Canceled
The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio, has marked Michaels’ August 29 Live & Amplified concert with Great White as canceled. “Due to medical reasons, Bret Michaels has CANCELED all remaining 2026 tour dates,” the venue states, directing ticket holders to seek refunds at their point of purchase.
