There are plenty of reasons people seek part-time work. According to Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) and FlexJobs Career Expert Keith Spencer, part-time jobs can provide numerous benefits to job seekers at all career levels:

“In addition to earning extra income, part-time jobs can help workers try out new skills and advance their careers,” said Spencer. “Taking a part-time job also allows workers to gain hands-on experience, making it a smart move for anyone considering a new field or exploring different career paths.”

To help make your part-time job search more efficient, FlexJobs has scoured its database to identify the top companies, industries, and job titles with the most remote, part-time jobs.

Common questions about part-time remote jobs

In addition to highlighting the top companies and careers, FlexJobs’ career experts have shared a few of the most commonly asked questions from job seekers about part-time remote jobs.

1. How many hours a week is part-time?

There is no standard definition of “part-time.” That’s for you and your employer to decide. That said, many employers use the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) definition of part-time work, which is working less than 35 hours per week.

As you search for a remote, part-time job, most job postings will give you a general idea of how many hours a week you can expect to work and the days or shifts you might be scheduled for.

Additionally, remote work options come in various forms, including fully remote, hybrid work, and options to work remotely.

2. What are the drawbacks of a part-time job?

If you’re taking on a part-time remote job for additional income, do the math to ensure it all adds up. While a remote job means you won’t have to commute, there are other costs to consider, such as having less free time at night or on the weekend.

Likewise, if you’re considering dropping from full-time to part-time, make sure your finances can handle the reduction in income and possible loss of benefits.

Furthermore, if your part-time job is your only job, you likely have a significant amount of flexibility in your schedule. But if it’s a second job, think about the impact it can have on your work-life balance.

For example, if you’re scheduled for 20 hours a week, do you really have 20 hours a week to devote to the job? Will that take you away from family time or hobbies? And can you do the job in 20 hours, or will you end up working more just to complete your tasks?

Another critical point to consider is how a remote, part-time job fits into your larger career goals.

Are you taking on the job to learn new skills, advance in your career, or make a career change? Or, are you strictly in it for the extra money? Knowing your goals for a part-time role can help you choose the right one for you.

3. Do part-time jobs offer benefits?

Yes! While benefits vary between companies, there are companies that hire for part-time jobs with benefits.

Whether you’re looking for part-time jobs that offer health insurance or perks like paid time off, you can find part-time remote job opportunities with benefits in myriad fields.

4. Do employers prefer to hire for part-time jobs?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as every employer has different business needs and reasons for hiring part-time team members. Some employers may prefer to hire part-time workers to accommodate fluctuating team needs and schedules.

To find the right part-time job fit, carefully read job descriptions and research employers to ensure alignment between your goals and the employer’s needs.
