McDonald's longstanding partnership with Hello Kitty
While the Happy Meal collaboration is new to the U.S., this is not the first time McDonald's (MCD) has teamed up with Hello Kitty or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The fast-food giant has already debuted versions of this partnership in Malaysia and Italy. Although those international launches also featured the iconic franchises, each market offered a unique spin with a different toy lineup and themed packaging tailored to local audiences.

McDonald's nostalgic marketing strategy to boost growth
McDonald's is one of the most recognizable fast-food chains worldwide. This might be because it has stayed true to its iconic golden arches, red and yellow branding, “I'm Lovin' It” tag line, and beloved Happy Meal for decades.
By tapping into customers' nostalgic associations, McDonald's has built a loyal fan base and become the fast-food giant it is today.

As the pioneer of the fast-food kids' meal trend, it's no surprise that McDonald's sells over 1 billion Happy Meals annually worldwide, which accounts for a big part of its sales.
While rivals like Restaurant Brands International's (QSR) Burger King and Wendy's (WEN) have tried competing against it by launching their own versions of kids' meals with collectible toys, none have matched McDonald's cultural impact.
