McDonald's brings back three spicy breakfast items after five years

With the original Egg McMuffin hitting McDonald's menus in 1975, 2025 marks the 50-year anniversary of the chain's most iconic breakfast item.

After quietly bringing in other breakfast sandwiches like the McChicken Biscuit and Chicken McGriddle to select locations in Michigan earlier this summer, the chain just announced an official celebration of its entry into the breakfast space — between its launch in the 1940s and 1975, the chain only served a main menu of burgers — with three revived versions of past morning sandwiches: the Spicy Egg McMuffin, the Spicy Sausage McMuffin and the Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg will all launch nationwide on July 8.

McDonald's to launch three classic sandwiches ‘with a fiery twist'

“This limited-time glow-up includes everything you already love about the iconic Egg McMuffin — melty cheese, a freshly cracked egg, Canadian bacon and a perfectly toasted and buttered English Muffin — plus a fiery, delicious twist: a shot of McDonald's signature Spicy Pepper Sauce,” the fast-food chain said in a statement. “Whether you're fueling up for a morning marathon of meetings or just need something delicious to kickstart your day, these breakfast sandwiches deliver big, bold flavors.”

Each of these sandwiches is already on U.S. menus in the classic, non-spicy version while spicy breakfast sandwiches under slightly different names were briefly available as part of the chain's push to expand its breakfast offering in 2020. At the time, McDonald's sold the Cheesy Jalapeño Sausage McMuffin with Egg, the Cheesy Jalapeño Sausage McMuffin and the Cheesy Jalapeño Sausage McMuffin with Egg & Cheese before eventually retiring them as the world emerged from the covid-19 pandemic. The same toppings were then also available on a biscuit.

Without specifying the exact date that the sandwiches will leave the menu, McDonald's said that this is a temporary seasonal promotion that will not be available forever.

“Just like your social media stories, the Spicy McMuffin won’t last forever,” McDonald's says in the press release. “Set that alarm clock on July 8 — because this one's worth waking up for.”

The original Egg McMuffin which the relaunch is meant to honor was created by California franchise owner Herb Peterson; he began experimenting with different flavors in the early 1970s and eventually settled on fried egg and slices of American cheese and Canadian bacon on an English muffin.

McDonald's had already made the decision to expand into breakfast after seeing the success that emerged after it gave Pittsburgh franchise owner Jim Delligatti permission to start selling donuts and pastries during early hours and quickly approved what history now knows as the Egg McMuffin.

The Hotcakes were added in 1971 and remain on the menu to this day while other breakfast items that have gone on and off the menu over the years include standalone biscuits, egg burritos and donuts as well as healthier options such as the Fruit & Maple Oatmeal and Egg White Delight McMuffin. In 2015, McDonald's also made most of its breakfast items available at all hours.
