McDonald's is returning to its roots with the revival of an iconic part of its history, awakening nostalgic memories for longtime fans while sharing them with the younger generations.

For the first time in 20 years, McDonald's is bringing back McDonaldland, unveiling a new limited-time meal, exclusive shake, collectible tins, and retail partnerships.

What's in the McDonaldland meal?

The McDonaldland meal includes:

  • A choice of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets
  • World Famous Fries
  • The new limited-edition Mt. McDonaldland Shake
  • One of six souvenir collectable tins

While McDonald's  (MCD)  has yet to disclose the exact flavors of the Mt. McDonaldland Shake, it features a blue-colored base inspired by volcanic lava and a pink whipped cream topping modeled after Donaldland's whimsical clouds.

The six exclusive collectable tins contain stickers and postcards and feature a different character from Donaldland's, including Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Birdie, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and the Fry Friends.

The new McDonaldland meal and shake will be available at all participating McDonald's restaurants nationwide starting August 12 while supplies last.

McDonald's partners with retailers to drop exclusive McDonaldland merchandise

To complete the McDonaldland relaunch, McDonald's is teaming up with Pacsun to release a lineup of branded merchandise, including graphic tees, sweat sets, hats, and accessories. The collection will be available for purchase beginning August 12, both online and at Pacsun stores.

The fast-food giant is also partnering with Away, the travel and lifestyle brand. Starting August 18, fans will receive a free McDonaldland-themed bag charm or luggage tag with every purchase at its retail stores while supplies last.

McDonaldland history

McDonald's introduced McDonaldland in 1971 as a fantasy world through commercials and in-store marketing to further appeal to kids. It featured multiple fictional characters, including Grimace, Birdie, The Hamburger, Officer Big Mac, Mayor McCheese, the Fry Kids, McNugget Buddies, and the iconic Ronald McDonald.

This cast became memorable for those who grew up during that era since they were seen at every McDonald's restaurant, in Happy Meals, and on merchandise.

However, by the early 2000s, McDonald's changed its marketing strategy and began phasing out the characters to modernize the brand and appeal to a broader audience.

McDonald's faces ongoing sales declines

McDonald's decision to revive McDonaldland may be a response to its recent financial struggles.

During the first quarter of 2025, McDonald's same-store sales fell 3.6%, marking the biggest drop in nearly five years. The company attributed declining guest traffic as the primary cause.

Reintroducing McDonaldland could be a strategic move to reverse the ongoing declines in sales and foot traffic by reviving a marketing approach that once worked for the company and helped it become a leader in the sector.

McDonald's nostalgic marketing strategy to reverse declines

Over the last few years, McDonald's has leaned on nostalgic marketing to drive business growth. This strategy creates a strong connection between a product and customers' emotions, promoting familiarity and developing a positive association, which can build long-term loyalty.

The fast food giant brought back some of the most beloved McDonaldland characters in 2023, including the Hamburglar, as part of a burger campaign. That same year, it launched the Grimace Shake to celebrate Grimace's birthday, sparking social media engagement.

In 2025, McDonald's also returned the seasonal Shamrock Shake to its menu, featuring O'Grimacey, Grimace's green Irish uncle.

By blending nostalgia and limited-time offers, McDonald's aims to foster customer engagement, increase sales, and boost foot traffic for sustainable, long-term growth.
