Quick facts:

  • The stock market is closed on Labor Day, which this year falls on Monday, September 1st.
  • The bond market is also closed on Labor Day, but cryptocurrency will remain tradable.
  • Labor Day is one of 10 annual stock market holidays. There are also three stock market half days each year.

What we call the stock market in the United States is actually two different stock exchanges: the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq. Luckily for American investors, both exchanges keep the same hours and observe the same holidays and half days.

Typically, the stock market is open for trading every Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, although it closes in observance of 10 different stock market holidays each year.

Is the stock market open on Labor Day (September 1st, 2025)?

The stock market will be closed on Monday, September 1st, 2025, in observance of Labor Day.

This means that investors should plan to execute any important trades before the 4:00 p.m. closing bell on Friday, August 29th, or plan to delay them until after the 9:30 a.m. opening bell on Tuesday, September 2nd.

That being said, many brokerages allow for extended-hours trading, meaning some investors may be able to make trades until 8:00 p.m. on Friday the 29th or begin trading again starting at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday the 2nd.
