I appreciate this video. My day job is woodworking, and I got an LT15 to create custom sized timbers for my woodworking business. I loved it so much I decided to go to the LT40 Super Wide, but in order to pay for it I take mobile and custom cutting jobs. Once the mill is paid off (I expect about another year max) those side jobs are just extra cash. It makes sense financially, and I find sawmilling to be extremely rewarding and it utilizes skills I already have. You've definitely gotta have some knowledge about trees/wood and some passion to make it work, it's not for everyone. I love it.
$50??!! Up here in CT that would cost 500+ when you add in all the EV charging stations and the bills s that our governor told people they didn't have to pay during covid, now we pay for it all in a Public Benefits Charge, added to our regular usage and delivery bill.
At 83 years old, I don’t think I want to buy a sawmill and start my own business. I will however continue helping a friend with a Woodmizer. It’s work, but enjoyable.
Gday mate, l would love to start one here in Geelong Australia, but with prices of everything to start, and worst is property to run a Sawmill. Everything here is over priced 10 fold mate, its out of control mate. I have started a business making hand crafted small timber items, soon to be doing dining tables and alike.
Hey Nathan, your comment about “ meat and potatoes” being a Tennessee saying is not exactly true. I’m up here in New York, I grew up on my uncle’s dairy farm, and out in the country up here that was heard many times. So really, it isn’t just a Tennessee saying. Btw, your channel is great. Very interesting and enjoyable!👍
Kills me when you guys burn the slabs, but maybe it’s different down there. We bundle em and sell bundles either at the mill or delivered local. They sell fast as we can make them, we don’t have to process further and they pay our diesel bill. Maybe you don’t have a market. Great operations both of you.
1st off everything you cut shouldn't go to waste everything is valuable the dust the chips everything too many people aren't thinking big picture I could market it all for one thing or another 👍
Appreciate the video. At 49 I just bought my 1st woodmizer, an LT 35. Gonna retire in a few years and with my kids grown and gone I needed a hobby. Most relaxed I've ever been. My grandfather was a logger/sawyer and I got to remembering him and the next thing I know I had ordered a mill. Watching yours and Robert Miltons videos have helped me a great deal. Thank you. If your ever in the Erin, TN area feel free to drop by and check out my set up and give a few tips. Keep up with the great videos and I'll keep waiting for them to come out.
Good morning Nathan, my question to you and other sawyers on here is taxes and what benefits IE write offs come with tax season by owning a sawmill large or small. You do a great job with your everyday video adventures , keep em coming!!
Thanks Kindly Nathan! I don’t have a saw mill but I am a woodworker and buy from some Amish sawyers when needed. I never get tired of watching and learning from your channel and your friends. Plus all the farm Family besides the human ones. Looks like the red buds are blooming there judging by the colors as you go down the highway. And here in Lancaster County we do use that “meat and potatoes” term. Many Blessings and keep on making the saw dust and boards! I never get bored by your boards! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
after a full business case development with research of supplies required, cost and likely customer answers. Then all the milling, wood handling equipment, buildings and storing then the extra equipment and timber handling, trimming and kilns. What do you have invested in your business start at 100K plus.Let alone how your business has developed.
Hello! I enjoy your videos, even when I don't know anything about wood, and live in an island (Dominican Republic)… Any way, I wondered if you can use the slabs to produce energy for the mills. Is it a viable option for you? Greetings!
Good vid. Ambition will take you a long way in life too bad a lot of people either lost it or just don't have it and the neat thing you don't even have to be smart, just have ambition.
You can make your own 3 phase power. All you need is a 3 phase electric motor. It can be rewired to become a 3 phased generator. Hook it to a belt driven 220 electric motor that runs on regular line power and guess what, you have 3 phased power.
What about a ‘collaborative ’ book/ video ? You and your mates could find a ‘ghost writer’ to do the book. You and Robert supply the knowledge , and he/she puts it together. Even do it via. electronics ( Zoom, etc.) at times that suit you both. If a video , you must have hundreds of hours of material. Robert 🇦🇺
Nathan one thing new sawmill sawyers must have is a passion for working with wood . If someone doesn’t like hard work milling is not for you . Sawyers must have a love to saw a log , open it up and admire the beauty of wood, that’s what drive a good sawyer . I look forward to the challenge everyday .

You can “ phase shift “ from single phase to three phase using a VFD.

This is such an awesome idea! Great video I’m hoping to start up a sawmill business soon and this is very helpful
Nathan;
I know it varies. How many board feet can be sawed by a full time sawyer on average.
I know tree sizes vary. Its a ballpark figure i seek
How do you keep the boards from building up too much moisture when you dead stack them?

Great video! Your Youtube channel helped kindle my love of sawing years ago!

If you use the word meal for mill …do you use the word mill for meal…humm..makes me hungry just thinking about it😂

Nathan you need to get real sometimes. Just because you can do it does not mean anyone can do it. Think about it.
I just got in with a company they send me there low grade maple bolts and I mill them to there specs. Loving it
damn that 480 is the way to go. slick setup

So should I start my own sawmill business and be like you?
I didn’t realize there was that much hemlock in TN. I don’t see much of it over near the Blue Ridge in VA. Would love to get my hands on some!
If you would write a book I would definitely purchase!!!
Better leave your sawmill buddy a pair of your safety glasses.
Would adding a chipper to sell mulch add to the profit. That way you don’t have to burn anything
Thanks Natan ur a primo Baaasart.😀👽

I just got a woodmizer lx30, been watching you for a year or 2 now, ive learned quite a bit from watching
Burn Wood 👎
The guard rail is a great idea
I did not expect an electric motor would be that energy efficient. It's kind of a shame he leaves his sawmill outside like that.

Another great video as usual. Thanks for the trip.
Nice setup!

another tool you need is way to move your logs and lumber around, because logs are very heavy!
