Every family has a restaurant they visit for all occasions, whether a casual family gathering or an important milestone, and this local eatery was a beloved one.

Domenico Belcastro founded Domenico's Restaurant in 1967 in Levittown, New York. This family-owned establishment gained the hearts of hundreds of guests by serving homemade, authentic Italian food for nearly six decades.

The restaurant has remained active in the community, encouraging business by organizing events and holiday celebrations. It has become a part of people's most important moments in life.

However, operating a restaurant is challenging, especially when navigating an uncertain economy and amid a consumer slowdown that has led even some of the biggest chains to close multiple locations or even file for bankruptcy.

Domenico's Restaurant announces its closure

Domenico's Restaurant lived through some of the best and worst years in the U.S. economy, outliving many fellow local eateries. Unfortunately, its biggest fear has now become a reality.

The restaurant took to social media on May 21 to announce it will close its doors and shut down operations on June 29.

“We want to thank you all for the last 58 years of unforgettable memories. We will forever be grateful for this community,” the post stated.

The post ended with the owner expressing his optimism and desire to reopen the business at some point in the future. Despite what happens, it will continue serving its customers and running business normally until the last day.

“We are hopeful that this is not our last chapter but as of right now, nothing is concrete. Please come in these last few weeks and see us; we would love to see as many of you as we can!”

The community is devastated by the shocking news

As soon as the announcement was made, hundreds of devastated customers expressed their sadness on Facebook, with nearly 500 reactions, over 300 comments, and more than 300 shares.

Many users were in disbelief of the news, with one commenting, “No way, this place is a legacy,” and another stating, “So sad to hear this.”

A former employee also reacted to the post by commenting, “Domenico's will always hold a special place in my heart. I worked there from 2006 to 2015 and have many fond memories. I'm grateful for the experience and opportunities.”

Even a neighboring local flower shop expressed its sadness by commenting, “We are heartbroken to hear this; up until 15 months ago, our store was neighbors with them. Since we purchased our store 25 years ago, they were not only our neighbor, but became our friends. We celebrated many milestone occasions with our family at Domenico’s. Our community is losing a great business who was always willing to help out the schools, churches, clubs, businesses, and more. We will miss you immensely. and so will our community.”
