Beloved beer brand files unexpected Chapter 11 bankruptcy

The craft beer industry has struggled over the last three years as production has stalled and the number of breweries has declined since 2023.

Craft breweries have continued to struggle in 2025, as brewery closings outpaced openings, with 9,269 breweries operating in June 2025, down 1%, compared to 9,352 in June 2024, the Brewers Association said in its 2025 Midyear Market Report released on July 23.

The number of craft breweries had risen slightly in 2024 from 9,339 in 2023 before plummeting.

Craft beer production has also plummeted with beer volume falling by about 5% year-over-year, compared to 2024, the report said. Production had declined by 4% in 2024, compared to 2023.

The craft brewing sector is filled with entrepreneurial stories of brewery owners, who transformed their home-brewing hobby into a commercial business.

Some businesses have enjoyed success, while others have struggled and filed for bankruptcy protection to reorganize and sometimes close down.

Three Weavers Brewing files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Inglewood, Calif.-based Three Weavers Brewing Company is one craft brewery that enjoyed success for years before its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize its business.

The debtor, GRDN Hospitality LLC, filed its Subchapter V petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California on July 24, listing $1 million to $10 million in assets and liabilities.

The debtor did not indicate a reason for filing for bankruptcy in its petition.

The craft brewery has been on a rollercoaster ride in the beer business since its founding in 2013 by Lynne Weaver.

Three Weavers Brewing sold and reacquired

The founding brewer and about a dozen investors sold the brewery to CANarchy in July 2018 in exchange for shares of the buyer's entity, valued at about $18.4 million, according to Brewbound.

CANarchy's beer brands included Oskar Blues, Cigar City, Deep Ellum, Squatters, Wasatch, Perrin, and Revitalyte.

CANarchy was reportedly the nation's sixth-largest craft brewery by volume in 2020, according to the Brewers Association

The CANarchy acquisition was short-lived as the Lynne Weaver investment group returned to the table in June 2021 to reacquire Three Weavers Brewing to pursue Weaver's vision of a branded brewery, tasting room, and restaurants within Hollywood Park's retail district, adjacent to SoFi Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers NFL teams.

Weaver was not immediately available for comment.

Three Weavers Brewing brews seven beers in cans for distribution to a variety of stores, including Seafarer Kolsch, Expatriate West Coast IPA, Cloud City Hazy IPA, Citra Puff Juicy Pale Ale, Vela Hazy IPA, Light Trails West Coast IPA, and Three Weavers Grdn Prty Juniper Lemon Cubumber Collins malt beverage, according to its website.

The brewer also manufactures three non-alcoholic canned brews, NA Lager, NA IPA, and NA Hazy IPA.

The brewery's Inglewood taproom has 12 beers, a hard tea, and Pineapple Selzer on tap.

Three Weavers Brewing distributes its canned beverages to several retail chains, including BevMo!, Total Wine & More, Vons Supermarkets, Ralphs Grocery, Pavilions stores, Food 4 Less, Whole Foods, Foods Co., Gelson's Market, and Lazy Acres Natural Market.
