McDonald’s brings back unexpected breakfast item after 6 years

Nothing hits harder than a weekend McDonald's breakfast combo with a crispy hashbrown and a cup of coffee. After all, it is well deserved after a long and exhausting week.

Since debuting the Egg McMuffin in 1971, McDonald's has launched so many good breakfast sandwich options that it's hard to choose just one.

However, for some, this decision is a no-brainer.

McDonald's first introduced McGriddles to its breakfast menu in 2003. This breakfast item consists of fluffy, pancake-like griddle cakes infused with maple syrup.

Since their release, McGriddles have become a fan-favorite breakfast item, whether consumed on their own or as a sandwich. This sweet and savory addition is so good that it seems almost impossible to make it taste any better.

However, McDonald's might have found a way to level up this beloved breakfast item.

Because McGriddles have become so popular, McDonald's (MCD) got creative and launched a new flavor. This new addition combined McGriddles cakes with blueberries, giving them a fruity twist.

The fast-food giant began testing Blueberry McGriddles and multiple breakfast-sandwich versions for the first time in 2019. They were available at over 100 participating locations across the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for a limited time.

This round of testing aimed to gather consumer feedback, which, if positive, could have led to the launch of Blueberry McGriddles nationwide.

However, the test run ended, and the Blueberry McGriddles never debuted across the U.S.

McDonald's returns Blueberry McGriddles six years later

Although it seemed like all hope for Blueberry McGriddles' return was lost, this menu item has unexpectedly reappeared six years later.

McDonald's has begun testing Blueberry McGriddles breakfast sandwiches for a limited time in Houston, Texas, reported @mouthattack on Instagram.

These include:

Bacon, egg, and cheese Blueberry McGriddles breakfast sandwich
Sausage Blueberry McGriddles breakfast sandwich

If this second round of testing is successful, Blueberry McGriddles might finally become available nationwide, allowing thousands of fans to enjoy the berry-based treat for their morning breakfast.
