The fact Caleb even attempts to help these idiots is crazy, I would have kicked his ass out the moment he said the belt and glasses were designer. Btw as someone who has done web design and management making a whole site in a couple of hours is a red flag. Anyone who does that is either the BEST website developer in the world OR he is a liar/bad designer. Unless he is making sites on Wix or Square Space which at that point I wouldn't even call him a website designer but a decorator. Without any type of communication on branding or layout, you are going in blind, and if you submit a website through a cold DM most likely will have changes that would then require more time. What if they want some custom CSS for their shopping cart page, custom coding is not a quick endevor. The fact is that designing a website and leaving out any type of collaboration is also a big no-no in the web design world. You might get someone to open a DM, but if they don't like it they are not hiring you and now you just wasted time building a site with no buyer; that is a high-risk business/marketing strategy. People will hire web designers if they have other official sites to showcase their ability. Start with messaging small businesses that don't have the income to hire a whole team; they will pay less for the site but be fine with having a constant hosting fee. Overtime you will build a clientele and even get bigger jobs.
I dont understand he want to do websites. Make them a minimum amount. Like 200 dollars is not a lot. Sell them on hosting for 10 dollara a month. Set up a maintainance plan where you promise to test on bugs and responsiveness (so buy a second hand android phone, an android tablet. You probably already have a n iphone, tablet and mac pc to test the rest). Do a 3 hour free course on SEO and sell them an SEO test. Train yourself in content writing so you cab write their conrent since they dont have time for it. Add plugins like an instagram feed, shopify roll etc which you can pad for extra costs. Sell them on an hourly rate to help them and tell them you round up to 30 min (eventhough most quick fixes are only 15 min). Do you want me to continue on how you can make more on your website business besides just cold dming new clients who will nevee use your maintainance and seo plans because those people want Fiver proces while you want an core business around quality (so give those people quality!!!)

You gotta charge for building a site. Don’t devalue yourself. It can and should be a modest fee for a simple website with simple features, but you have to charge for your time and effort.
I don't get people making so much money and just to end up broke I only get 45k a year and I live in alaska we have one of the highest living costs and I still have savings and stocks.
