The U.S. car industry has had its share of struggles since its heyday.

General Motors used to control about 50% of the U.S. car market and, along with Ford and Chrysler, the Detroit Big 3 held about 85% of the U.S. market through the 1960s.

Even through the 90s, the Big 3s market share was above 70%, and it didn't dip below 50% until 2008.

However, over the last 17 years, automakers from Japan and Korea have successfully toppled Detroit's dominance.

Ford and GM sales combined represented at least 50% of U.S. sales every year until 2001, and fell below 33.3% for the first time in 2012.

While there are numerous reasons for the decline, one of the most obvious is that U.S. cars have a reputation for lacking in quality.

Consumer Reports recently ranked car brands on their reliability using data from its annual reliability surveys.

Consumer Reports Top 5 reliable auto brands:

  • Subaru
  • Lexus
  • Toyota
  • Honda
  • Acura

The first U.S. car company to make the list is GM Brand Buick at 11. Ford checks in at 13, Chevy at 16, and Tesla at 17.

Stellantis doesn't rank until Jeep makes an appearance at 19.

Stellantis moved the CEO's office back to Michigan and plans a large investment in U.S. manufacturing.

Stellantis recalls another 219,000 vehicles due to rearview camera issue

Stellantis has a new CEO focused on retaking the company's place as one of the country's top automakers. But its latest recall won't help it turn things around.

Chrysler parent company Stellantis STLA is recalling 219,577 Ram ProMaster vans and Dodge Journey vehicles in the U.S. due to an issue with the rearview camera that could diminish the driver's view, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday.

Earlier this summer, Chrysler issued a voluntary recall of 250,651 Pacifica and Voyager minivans model years 2022-2025.

Recalls are a recurring problem for Chrysler. Last year, the brand recalled more than 211,000 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that could disable the vehicles' electronic stability control systems.

Chrysler also recalled 67,180 300s due to another side airbag issue that could cause the device to rupture.

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa commits to the U.S. market with latest moves

Antonio Filosa, Stellantis' new CEO, has recommitted to the U.S. market by moving the CEO's office back to Michigan and plans to invest billions in U.S. manufacturing.

The new direction couldn't come at a better time.

Stellantis reported that total first-quarter 2025 U.S. sales decreased 12% year-over-year, despite a 16% increase in Ram brand sales and a 1% increase in Chrysler brand sales. Jeep brand sales saw a 2% increase.

The company reported total sales of 293,225 vehicles in the first three months of the year.

Second-quarter shipments fell 6% to 1.4 million vehicles globally, while North American shipments are expected to decline by 109,000 units, a 25% annual decline, due to reduced manufacturing and shipments of imported vehicles.

Stellantis expects a net loss of 2.3 billion euros ($2.68 billion) in the first half of the year due to pre-tax net charges and the early effects of U.S. tariffs.

Net revenue in the first half fell to 74.3 billion euros from 85 billion last year (to $86.65 billion from $99.13 billion).
