Summer is a time when many Americans want to travel to Europe and so airlines often have a network of seasonal flights both to and from secondary cities.

Seasonal routes for Delta Air Lines  (DAL)  include one from New York to Catania on the Italian island of Sicily as well as flights from Detroit to Dublin and Atlanta to Brussels. United Airlines  (UAL)  has periods during which it runs direct flights to Spain's Bilbao and Portugal's Faro and Madeira while JetBlue  (JBLU)  this year launched routes to Edinburgh and Madrid that it will retire for the year come October.

Athens and Budapest and Prague, oh my: New American Airlines destinations for 2026

Already thinking ahead to next summer, American Airlines  (AAL)  just announced an expansion of its long-haul network with six flights it will add in May 2025 — one new flight between its hub in Dallas-Fort Worth and Athens and five routes to Europe and Argentina that it had run in the past and is now bringing back from retirement.

The flight from Dallas to Athens International Airport (ATH) will run on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner  (BA)  from May 21 until the start of August of next year and be the fifth U.S. city from which the carrier flies to the Grecian capital.

Returning routes announced by the airline on Aug. 6 include flights from DFW to Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires and Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland.

Both will run between May 21 until a respective Aug. 3 and 4 while another returning route is a year-round flight between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Milan's Malpensa Airport (MXP) starting on May 29. These two flights were planned not just to serve Americans vacationing in Europe but also fans coming into Dallas for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

As part of its recent efforts to expand its Philadelphia network amid the opening of its new Flagship lounge in the city, American Airlines will also start to seasonal routes to Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) in Budapest and Václav Havel Airport (PRG) on May 21. Tickets for all the flights will be available for booking nearly a year ahead from Aug. 11, 2025.

‘We take great pride in the breadth of our global network'

“Customers continue to tell us that Europe is where they want to go each summer and these new routes make it even easier to cross the Atlantic in 2026,” American's Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Brian Znotins said in a statement.

As part of the same announcement, American also revealed plans to up the seats flown between the U.S. and Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) by 45% by upping service from DFW and LAX to a respective daily and twice-daily for the 2026 summer season.

“At American, we take great pride in the breadth of our global network,” American's Senior Vice President of DFW Operations Jim Moses said in a statement. “That's especially true as we continue to break records at DFW and add exclusive access to destinations like Athens and Zurich.”
