Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has been all over the news for many years, thanks to his innovative companies, which have drawn many fans to the billionaire's ideas.
Since President Donald Trump won the election in 2024, Musk has aligned himself with the Republican leader, even working as a special government employee for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

This move lost Musk a lot of supporters, with many Tesla owners selling their cars in protest. But when Musk chose to step away from his work with Trump and then started bad-mouthing the president's recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill” within a week, the billionaire started to look unhinged.

While Musk has apologized to Trump since his original outbursts, the Tesla founder continues to openly oppose the president's actions. And then on July 4, Musk took to X to offer up a new idea: a brand new political party.
The America Party
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” Musk tweeted along with a poll, which showed 65.4% of voters in favor.

Then on July 5, Musk tweeted again about the results, saying, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
While Musk seemed to be enjoying the comments, calling them “comedy gold” in the thread, some people were not at all amused with his latest idea: Tesla investors.

Tesla stock took a sharp drop as of July 3, going down 9.01%. Musk promised to fully refocus on Tesla after leaving his work with DOGE, as the EV company suffered in his absence with a 20% revenue drop year over year.
Despite that, it seems that Musk still has some fans of the idea — and one of them is a very unexpected choice, considering the history of their social media interactions.
Billionaires joining forces
On July 5, fellow billionaire and “Shark Tank” star Mark Cuban replied to Musk's tweet confirming the formation of a new political party, saying, “I work with @voterchoice. They will help you get on ballots. That is their mission.”
The interaction drove lots of reactions in the comments, with some for the idea of Cuban and Musk working together and some against it.
“@elonmusk and @mcuban working together was not on my bingo card for 2025. Love it,” X user Brady Ferron said.
“It’s sad when you are getting help from @mcuban… Elon…. That should be an immediate red flag that you doing the wrong thing. Go back to making us go to Mars and your amazing cars and stuff like that. You are going to lose this battle,” X user Tyrie Blue said.
As Cuban has a history of openly questioning Musk's decisions on social media and sometimes criticizing them, a few other people wondered why he was trying to help at all.
“How do you go from criticizing Elon to being buddies? What do you stand for Cuban?” X user Julie asked.
As usual, Musk did not reply to Cuban's comment. In the meantime, Cuban's name trended on X, with more than 33,000 posts discussing the tweet.
